Australia’s Top 25 Music Blogs (Now With Hitwise Data).

by Nick on August 21, 2009

Be like Mike.

I’ve previously posted this list of Australia’s top 25 music blogs

  1. Electrorash
  2. Mass Hyperbole
  3. Who The Hell?
  4. A Reminder
  5. Silence Is A Rhythm Too
  6. Waves At Night
  7. Cyclic Defrost
  8. Twelve Major Chords
  9. Off The Record
  10. It All Started…
  11. Hooverdust
  12. Oceans Never Listen
  13. Whiteboydancefloor
  14. Rose Quartz
  15. Wireless Bollinger
  16. Lexicon Devil
  17. Before Hollywod
  18. Reel Around The Fountain
  19. Decomposing Trees
  20. Open Your Eyes
  21. Flop Eared Mule
  22. Scatterblog
  23. Joe.Blog
  24. He Is Faux Pas
  25. Twenty Songs

To calculate the list, I used the Adage methodology, also used successfully by Julian at Adspace Pioneers.

I thought I’d have a look at the list from another perspective - using Hitwise data.

For interest’s sake, I threw in Mess and Noise and Polaroids of Androids, since they caused the most consternation when I included them in my Top 25 list.

The result?

Mess + Noise is killing it.

Using Hitwise data we compiled a Custom Category of my Top 25 Australian Music Blogs.  Rankings are based on market share of visits by Australian Internet users, for July 2009 according to Hitwise(Click on the image to enlarge).

Using the same Hitwise data we added all those Australian music blogs to Hitwise’s Custom Music Blog Category.  Again, rankings are based on market share of visits by Australian Internet users, for July 2009 according to Hitwise(Click on the image to enlarge).

Mess and Noise still dominate.

The challenge is for another Australian music blog to start closing the gap on Mess + Noise.

nice number crunching capt crocker… and thanks for including us within the breakdown..

I would be interested to see the numbers from within mess and noise.. as in the percentage of ‘discussion’ traffic vs traffic for the articles etc.

I just know that when we get peeps coming from m+n we got a tonne more referrals when it’s from a link posted within a thread as apposed to a link within an actual news post or article.

haha nice!

I think the reason M+N are killing it is the great community they’ve built. If anyone is going to challenge this position in their current incarnation I think it will be ‘Roids of ‘Droids. Other players need to step up to take back some of the pie from Sound Alliance for the sake of independence if nothing else.

Electrorash will always be number one in my heart ;)

Actually I’d love to see the Hitwise top 10 on “Music Websites” rather than blogs specifically. What are the most visited music websites online for an Australian audience?

Matt 08.21.09 at 5:35 pm

Umm… No WayCoolJnr on the list?

Nick 08.21.09 at 5:45 pm

@Matt - Yeah. WayCoolJnr is more of a marketing site so I don’t really think it counts.
@Ned Dwyer - I have emailed them.
@Jonny Polaroidz - I have forwarded your question to them, will be interesting to see what they come back with.

I’m curious, if Mess and Noise was included in a music blog discussion, why weren’t Fasterlouder and inthemix in it too? To me they’re the same kind of website for different music genres?
