Music in Advertising: When Bands and Brands Make Love

by Nick on November 13, 2008

As an advocate of social media, I’m the last person to get excited about (or notice) TV ads.  But sometimes songs and advertisements just mesh beautifully.

What used to be the sign of a sellout is now a practical necessity for most bands and as a result, blending music with advertisements is no longer the cred-crunch it used to be.

This is in part attributable to the raging success of the iPod ads which have effectively guaranteed a hit record for any band lucky enough to be synched (I’m looking at you Ting Tings).

Anyway, here are some examples of ads running in Australia that find the right balance between the music, the visual and the brand.

Feist - ‘1234′/eBay

Whitley - ‘Lost In Time’/Foxtel IQ

Joanna Newsom - ‘Sprout and the Bean’/Tourism Victoria

Phil Collins - ‘In The Air Tonight’/Cadbury

Yves Klein Blue - ‘Polka’/Mitsubishi

Please leave a comment if there are others I have missed, I’d like to start a collection.

Wow, I was wondering why Yves Klein Blue were touring so much at the moment. I don’t watch TV so missed half of these ads (apart from the Cadbury one, massive Phil Collins fan).

They are definitely not my cup of tea but I guess this can partially explain the big push.

I became a fan of Basia Bulat after watching this ad:

This may also act as a good reference:
